Vodafone has announced the Vodafone 845, a top end Android powered handset that comes in at a budget price. The Vodafone 845 smartphone is an ultra-compact design which they say is the smallest Android device they have seen. The Vodafone 845 has the honour of being the first Vodafone Android.
The smaller dimensions means there’s only room to fit a 2.8in screen and this ends up being one of the handset’s biggest failings. This device also comes with internal memory capacity of 512 MB, Micro SD memory cards, with the device able to handle cards up to 16 GB in size, 3.5G support, WiFi, built-in GPS, FM radio, Bluetooth 2.1 and a fairly large 1200 mAh battery. The phone’s 1,200mAh battery was no slouch either, as we found we could get just over two days out of it for calls and a mixture of surfing over 3G and Wi-Fi.
The Vodafone phone screen supports up to 65,000 pixels colours, and the device includes an accelerometer which allows for display auto rotation, so flipping the handset to its side when web browsing will automatically make the display show in landscape mode.
This 845 Android smartphone is quite a basic Android handset, similar to the HTC Tattoo in terms of hardware specification. The specs read like an entry level Android phone with its Android, 2.1, and 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and an LED flash, which is enabled with video recording capabilities. Captured images can be touched up straight on the phone, as it comes with a photo/video editor pre installed.
Under the main display sit the hard navigation and menu control keys. two call control keys, plus menu and back buttons. In the middle of these sits an optical track pad that you can use for moving through menus or scrolling through long lists. The track pad is responsive and also fairly accurate at tracking your finger movement. However, as the phone already has a touchscreen we found we didn’t actually use it that often, something that we’ve also found on other Android handsets with trackpads and trackballs.
Android OS 2.1 in this device , giving you access to all the best in applications for the device, including access to app like Google Earth, Google Goggles and full Google SatNav with voice navigation, which is available for all Android 2.1 devices. Vodafone also have integrated the Vodavone 845 into their 360 service, which brings social networking support and other features. Vodafone are quite keen to push 360, so including it in their own brand Android phone seems sensible. It also boasts Mobile TV compatibility.
A full media player also included in this845 Smartphone, with support for the most popular formats for music and video, including MP3, AAC and MP4, and the phone also includes a full GPS receiver with aGPS support. the Vodafone 845 is a big leap forward in terms of the quality and feature set we are used to seeing with most manufacturer branded handsets. Available in Black or White, and the Vodafone 845 mobile phone price is from £15-£45+.
